North Caucasus natives end hunger strike in Croatian prison

About 50 asylum seekers, primarily from Ingushetia, Chechnya, and Dagestan, held in the Ezevo immigration prison in Croatia, have ended their hunger strike. The strike was previously launched in protest against the possible extradition of 19-year-old Ingush native Magomed-Amin Gatagazhev to Russia and the violation of their rights.

After starting his hunger strike, Gatagazhev's health deteriorated sharply due to a worsening diabetes. After receiving medical treatment, he asked protesters to end the strike, expressing gratitude for their support. Croatian human rights activists are aware of the situation and are working to prevent Gatagazhev's extradition to Russia, believing this could expose him to torture and an unfair conviction.

It was previously reported that Gatagazhev is accused in Russia of participating in illegal armed groups due to his time in Syria. Russia claims he joined the armed group at the age of 13 or 14. He was detained while crossing the border between Bosnia and Croatia, having previously lived in Turkey.

Magomed-Amin Gatagazhev is the brother of Leyla Gatagazheva, who was extradited from Iraq to Russia in June 2023 and charged with similar crimes.
