Italy to Perpetuate Memory of Natalia Estemirova

On September 4, the Garden of the Righteous in Palermo, Italy, will be replenished with a commemorative majolica (ceramic piece) in honor of Natalia Estemirova, who became a victim for her human rights activities. She investigated gross human rights violations in Chechnya, including kidnappings, torture, and extrajudicial executions.

The ceremony in Palermo, which will be attended by city authorities and representatives of Memorial, is intended to emphasize the importance of remembering such people and the need to bring the perpetrators to justice. The Garden of the Righteous is part of a global movement dedicated to the memory of those who fought for human rights and justice.

Recall that Natalia Estemirova was kidnapped in Grozny on July 15, 2009, and her body was found in Ingushetia the same day. The murder has still not been solved, and the ECHR recognized the ineffectiveness of the investigation.

Recently, Natalia Estemirova's daughter, Lana Estemirova, published a book about her, "Please Live." The girl was only 15 years old when her mother was kidnapped and killed.
