Georgian authorities announced a reduction in poverty in the country
Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze announced at a briefing that the poverty rate in the country had decreased to 7.1% in 2025, lifting approximately 90,000 citizens out of poverty. He attributed this progress to improved economic indicators.
The politician noted that the 7.1% figure represents a threefold reduction in the poverty rate since 2020, when it stood at 21.3%. Kobakhidze recalled that in 2012, more than 1.1 million people lived below the poverty line, while in 2025, this figure had dropped to less than 280,000.
"The complete eradication of poverty in Georgia remains one of our main national goals. As long as nearly 280,000 of our fellow citizens continue to live below this threshold, we have no right to relax," the prime minister emphasized.
The head of government emphasized that the primary indicator of poverty by international standards is an absolute figure, not a comparative one. Kobakhidze expressed confidence that, if current economic growth rates and poverty reduction continue, Georgia will be able to completely eliminate it by 2030.
He also reported that since 2020, the country's economy has grown from 50 to 105 billion lari in national currency, and from 16 to 38 billion dollars in dollar terms.
