Azerbaijani journalist ends hunger strike due to deteriorating health

Journalist Polad Aslanov, serving a sentence in an Azerbaijani penal colony, has ended his hunger strike. The reason is a sharp deterioration in his health. The prisoner declared a hunger strike, demanding the release of all political prisoners from prisons.

The Climate Watch Partnership called for support for a petition demanding the release of political prisoners in Azerbaijan on the opening day of the 29th Climate Change Conference COP29.

The Climate Watch Partnership is a coalition of civil society organizations promoting human rights and inclusive action to combat climate change in Azerbaijan.

Earlier, the international journalistic organization Reporters Without Borders and the Committee to Protect Journalists condemned the detention of Azerbaijani journalist Polad Aslanov in a punishment cell and called for his release.

As Aslanov's wife noted, when he began his hunger strike, he weighed 49 kg and decided to take a drastic measure, demanding freedom for himself and other political prisoners.

The founder and head of the xeberman.com website, Polad Aslanov, was arrested in June 2019 on charges of treason and sentenced to 16 years. Human rights activists recognized him as a political prisoner. Later, the Supreme Court of Azerbaijan reduced his prison term to 13 years.
