Azerbaijan’s opposition arrested for two months

The court in Baku extended the period of arrest of public activist Bakhtiyar Hajiyev for another two months - until June 28. The defense disagreed with this decision.

Bakhtiyar Hajiyev was arrested on December 9 last year on charges of hooliganism and contempt of court. The man repeatedly went on hunger strike. The courts have failed to grant numerous requests by lawyers to change the measure of restraint to house arrest or release on bail.

Representatives of the State Department and the US Senate, the European Union, the Council of Europe and a number of international NGOs have repeatedly called for Hajiev’s release from custody.
