The number of visitors to North Caucasus Federal District resorts increased by 18% during the New Year holidays

During the New Year holidays, ski resorts in the North Caucasus Federal District (NCFD) welcomed 70,700 guests, an 18% increase compared to last year. This figure, published by the Kavkaz.RF development institute, reflects the number of cable car users.

The largest increase in visitors was recorded at the Veduchi resort in Chechnya, while Elbrus in Kabardino-Balkaria led the way in overall tourist numbers, with an average of 6,500 to 7,000 visitors daily. Kavkaz.RF also noted that the new Mamison resort in North Ossetia has been attracting around a thousand visitors per day since the beginning of January.

New services contributed to the increased popularity: Elbrus offered night skiing for the first time, and Arkhyz (Karachay-Cherkessia) saw a 25% increase in demand for night skiing under the stars, with over 10,000 guests taking advantage of the opportunity between January 1 and 11.

The 2026 World Press Freedom Index, published this morning by Reporters Without Borders (RSF), records the worst deterioration in global media freedom in 25 years. More than half of the world's countries rank the situation as "challenging" or "very challenging," and the average index level has never been lower. A key trend is increasing legal pressure on the media: of the five indicators used to assess press freedom worldwide (economy, law, security, politics, culture, and society), the "law" indicator showed the most significant decline.
