The Georgian opposition, non-governmental organizations, and civil society activists are planning a large-scale protest today, November 28, in support of the country's pro-European course and against the repressive policies of the ruling party. Exactly one year ago, the Georgian Dream party decided to suspend negotiations for the country's accession to the European Union. Since that day, protests in the capital have become daily occurrences.
Georgia's fifth president, Salome Zurabishvili, who rejects the legitimacy of the government and her successor, called on citizens to participate in the protest.
"Today is my day, yours, ours, yours! On November 28, a year later, we must stand together even more steadfastly to strengthen each other!" Salome Zurabishvili wrote on social media.
In the post, the former president emphasized that "Georgia will not submit to Russia," and the government "will not be able to block our path to Europe."
It is known that the former prime minister's party, Gakharia – For Georgia, will not participate in the upcoming protest. Party member Vika Pilpani told local media this. Moreover, according to her, the political force does not intend to participate in any event attended by the United National Movement.
"Exactly one year ago, these protests began with the sincere indignation of sincere people, which, unfortunately, escalated into extremely harmful actions by certain political forces. These political forces effectively destroyed the sincere protest of these people and culminated in the provocation of October 4. Therefore, we will not be where the UNM is," Pilpani stated.
