Georgia Celebrates Independence

On April 9, Georgia celebrates the Day of Adoption of the Act on the Restoration of State Independence and National Unity, Civil Harmony and Memory of the Dead.
Today, the victims of the dispersal of thousands of rallies in Tbilisi in 1989 are being commemorated in the country. At that time, 21 people were killed and hundreds were wounded. On that day, the Soviet army used tanks and poison gas to kill a peaceful demonstration for independence.

Two years later, on 9 April 1991, an extraordinary session of the Supreme Council adopted an act restoring Georgia’s independence.
