The Georgian opposition is initiating a parliamentary resolution against Russia's agreement with South Ossetia

The opposition party "Gakharia for Georgia" will introduce a parliamentary resolution protesting the "deepening alliance" agreement concluded between Russia and South Ossetia, as well as Moscow's policy of annexing Georgian regions. This information was announced at a briefing by party representative MP Shalva Kereselidze.

He emphasized that the Georgian legislature must provide a political and legal assessment of the agreement and take a firmer stance on Moscow's actions regarding the occupied territories of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

Furthermore, the party demands that the government end its passivity, resume active diplomatic activity, and strengthen its partnership with the international community to ensure that the issue of Georgia's occupied territories remains on the global agenda.

Kereselidze also stated that, in the face of these events, the current government, represented by the Georgian Dream party, is remaining silent, while parliament has every opportunity to make a political assessment of the current situation.

"Today, as Russia continues to seize Georgian territories, our duty is to demonstrate clarity and integrity in defending the independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of our country," Shalva Kereselidze emphasized.

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin initiated the ratification process in the State Duma for the treaty on further deepening the so-called "allied cooperation" between Russia and South Ossetia. The agreement, signed in Moscow on May 9, 2026, provides for expanded cooperation between the parties in defense, security, economics, infrastructure, and socio-political matters.
