The opposition party "For Georgia" has declared that Russia has begun a new phase in its quest to incorporate Georgian territory into the Russian Federation. This refers to the Tskhinvali Region, or the self-proclaimed Republic of South Ossetia.
The political party recalled the agreement signed in May between Moscow and the self-proclaimed authorities of South Ossetia, which deepens their allied relations. "For Georgia" noted that this is confirmed by the appointment of Russian official Marat Kambolov. He initially served as an advisor to the president, and now, according to media reports, may head the Tskhinvali government.
"The aforementioned agreement, aimed at the full integration of the socio-economic, transport, energy, and military spheres of the Tskhinvali Region with the Russian Federation, is another step toward the de facto annexation of Georgian territory. "This poses a direct threat to Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity," the party said in a statement.
"For Georgia" called on the authorities, represented by the ruling Georgian Dream party, to take legislative measures and enlist the support of international partners.
"However, the Dream party took no action, calling our proposed resolution condemning the annexation 'political posturing,'" the opposition concluded.
The day before, Georgian Foreign Minister Maka Bochorishvili emphasized that Russia's occupation of Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region poses serious security challenges for the entire region. She expressed gratitude to Turkey and Azerbaijan for their continued support of Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity. The minister noted that the situation in the occupied territories threatens security for the entire region, and the support of the international community in this matter, she said, is of particular importance.
