Crimean Tatar political prisoner placed in solitary confinement for the second time this year

Crimean political prisoner Eskender Abdulganiyev, sentenced to 12 years, reported being placed in solitary confinement twice after being transferred from Kemerovo Correctional Colony No. 29 to Penal Colony No. 41 in Yurga. No reason was given for his placement in solitary confinement.

According to him, the conditions in the solitary confinement cell are extremely poor: thin mattresses cause back pain, rats infest the cell, and the toilet has no flush tank. There is also no ventilation, and walks are scheduled for early, dark mornings. Abdulganiyev intends to challenge the illegality of his placement in solitary confinement and requests that complaints be filed regarding the conditions of his detention. After his first 15-day sentence, he was returned to the general prison unit, but on March 15, he was placed in solitary confinement for a second time for the same period.

The Crimean Tatar had previously served a sentence in a single-cell isolation cell (SCC) and was deemed a "malicious offender." As a reminder, while in SCC and solitary confinement, prisoners are deprived of visits, packages, and medical care.

Eskender Abdulganiyev was sentenced to 12 years in prison in November 2020 for involvement in the activities of Hizb ut-Tahrir, an organization banned in Russia but legally operating in many other countries.

The signing of a major package of agreements between Georgia and Azerbaijan became possible following Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev's visit to Tbilisi and his talks with Georgian Dream founder Bidzina Ivanishvili. This was announced by Georgian Economy Minister Mariam Kvrivishvili.

According to the minister, following the meeting, the parties began to move toward formalizing the agreements "very effectively and quickly."

Kvrivishvili emphasized that the signed documents are of "historic" significance for both countries, and that the energy component of cooperation is particularly important for Georgia.

The minister noted that the new agreements should strengthen the country's energy security, and Azerbaijan will maintain its status as Tbilisi's strategic partner in this area.

On May 18, Georgia and Azerbaijan signed a package of agreements in the fields of energy and transport. These include a 20-year intergovernmental agreement on electricity supplies and transit, as well as a two-decade extension of the contract for Azerbaijani gas supplies, in effect since 2003. Georgian authorities believe this will help ensure a stable public gas supply.

Also, starting May 26, passenger rail service between the capitals of Georgia and Azerbaijan, which was interrupted almost six years ago, will be restored. A train will run between Tbilisi and Baku every day.
