Crimean Tatar political prisoner was kept in prison 2.5 months longer

Crimean Tatar Arsen Abhairov stayed in prison No. 2 of Yeniseisk, Krasnoyarsk Territory, 2.5 months longer than the appointed time due to a court error. Lawyer Edem Semedlyaev recalled that conditions in prison were worse than in a colony: his client was entitled to fewer visits and calls home. An administrative claim will be filed regarding this matter.

In January of this year, Abkhairov was transferred from the Yenisei prison to a colony in the Republic of Buryatia. He complained of toothache and lack of qualified medical care. In addition, after the transfer, the prisoner’s varicose veins worsened. According to him, often one of the colony employees tries to bring him into religious or political conversations, but the Crimean Tatar stops them. He could face harsher punishment for talking about his beliefs.

In 2020, the Southern Military Court sentenced entrepreneur Arsen Abkhairov to 13 years in prison. He was accused of belonging to the Islamic party Hizb-ut-Tahrir, banned in Russia. In Ukraine and other countries of the world, the organization operates without restrictions at the level of national legislation.
