Crimean Tatar woman fined for failure to report

A resident of Old Crimea, Emine Zekeryaeva, was fined 50 thousand rubles on charges of failure to report a crime.

According to security officials, in 2016 the girl communicated on VKontakte with Ukrainian citizen Madina Stryapcha, who later went to Syria, joined a military formation there and planned a terrorist attack. Zekeryaeva was accused of not informing investigators about Stryapcha during a search of her home in August 2023.

“From that correspondence from seven years ago on VKontakte, which the security forces obtained, it does not follow that anyone was preparing or committing a crime. There were no legal grounds for accusing my client,” said lawyer Emil Kurbedinov. According to him, the criminal case against Zekeryaeva is aimed at developing the practice of denunciations by ordinary citizens. He also emphasized that this is another fact of “oppression and intimidation of the Crimean Tatars.”
