Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan responded to the possible assassination attempt on US President Donald Trump during the White House Correspondents' Dinner at the Washington Hill Hotel in Washington, D.C. He emphasized that "violence has no place in our democratic societies."
"I am glad to hear that President Donald Trump, the First Lady, the Vice President, and others present feel safe following the disturbing shooting incident at the Correspondents' Dinner. Violence has no place in our democratic societies," the Armenian prime minister wrote on the social media platform X.
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, for his part, stated that he was "deeply shocked by the shooting at the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner in Washington."
"Such acts of violence are unacceptable and must be strongly condemned. I am relieved that President Trump, the First Lady, and all present are safe. "I wish them continued security and prosperity," Aliyev wrote on his X-account.
Azerbaijan's leadership is striving to develop cooperation with the current US administration, which, as Novy Dosh previously reported, citing independent Azerbaijani experts, has abandoned its policy of prioritizing human rights and freedom of speech in various countries with authoritarian regimes. The Trump administration's primary focus is pragmatic economic and business interests, as confirmed during US Vice President J.D. Vance's visit to Baku in February of this year, during which calls from international human rights organizations to raise the issue of political prisoners in Azerbaijan during talks with Ilham Aliyev were ignored.
Today's emphatically emotional message from the Azerbaijani president regarding the incident in Washington is a nod to his gratitude to Donald Trump and his administration.
The shooting occurred in Washington during the annual White House Correspondents' Dinner, held at the Washington Hill Hotel. According to eyewitnesses, shots were fired, prompting the immediate evacuation of President Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, and Vice President Vance by Secret Service agents.
The suspect, 31-year-old California teacher Cole Allen, attempted to break through the cordon and managed to wound one of the Secret Service agents. He was apprehended. The attacker's arsenal, including a shotgun, a pistol, and several knives, was seized.
According to preliminary reports, Allen admitted that he wanted to kill members of the presidential administration. However, he did not directly state that he was targeting the president.
