The leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan congratulated Iran's new Ayatollah

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan sent a congratulatory telegram to Mojtaba Khamenei on his election as Supreme Leader of Iran. In the message, he expressed hope for the further development of Armenian-Iranian relations.

"I congratulate you on your election as Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran. I am confident that the strong ties between Armenia and Iran will continue to develop, achieving new successes. I take this opportunity to wish the friendly people of Iran prosperity and long-lasting peace," reads the congratulatory message published by the government press service.

The President of Azerbaijan, in turn, congratulated the third leader of the Islamic Revolution, according to the head of state's official website. In his letter, Ilham Aliyev once again expressed his condolences over the tragic death of Mojtaba Hussein Khamenei's father, Seyyed Ali Khamenei.

"Relations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Islamic Republic of Iran have historically been based on the will of our peoples, who have lived in good-neighborly and friendly relations. I express hope that we will work together to develop interstate ties based on mutual respect and trust, in accordance with the interests of our peoples. I once again congratulate you on this high appointment and wish the friendly and brotherly people of Iran peace and prosperity," the congratulatory message reads.

On Sunday, March 9, Iran's Council of Experts elected the son of the slain ayatollah as the third Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic. This marks the first hereditary transfer of power in the country since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
