Moscow explained what is preventing the resumption of political dialogue with Georgia
Russian-Georgian relations remain at a standstill, despite Moscow's formal statements of readiness to discuss contentious issues. Izvestia reports that the Russian Foreign Ministry believes that key disagreements between the two countries remain unresolved.
According to the newspaper, the Russian side points out that the obstacles to restoring political dialogue are primarily related to Georgia's position on the Tskhinvali region and Abkhazia.
"There are no preconditions for resuming political dialogue between Russia and Georgia, as Tbilisi maintains the position, espoused during the Saakashvili regime, of tying the resumption of diplomatic relations to Russia's renunciation of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. This demand is detrimental to Georgia itself and unrealistic. Moscow has emphasized that decisions to recognize the republics' statehood are irreversible," Izvestia quotes the ministry as saying.
At the same time, as the media notes, practical cooperation between the countries in certain areas continues, but the prospects for political rapprochement remain unclear.
