President Ilham Aliyev and Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan were awarded the Guernica Prize for Peace and Reconciliation for their efforts to achieve peace and develop dialogue between Azerbaijan and Armenia. The award was presented to the countries' ambassadors in Spain.
"It is a great honor for me to receive this prestigious award, the purpose of which is to perpetuate the historical memory of the Guernica tragedy and recognize the achievements of individuals who contribute to peace and reconciliation processes. The presentation of this award has a particularly symbolic significance," Aliyev emphasized.
He added that the Azerbaijani people, who have experienced the grave consequences of war and lived through nearly 30 years of conflict, "understand the value of peace and reconciliation only too well."
The Guernica Prize for Peace and Reconciliation is a prestigious international award established in memory of the Guernica tragedy in 1937, when German and Italian troops bombed civilians in the Spanish city during the Spanish Civil War. The prize is awarded for outstanding achievements in peace, reconciliation, and human rights, as well as for efforts to overcome conflicts and promote international dialogue.
This is the second international award Pashinyan and Aliyev have received this year. In February, they were both awarded the Zayed Award for Human Fraternity in Abu Dhabi.
