Pashinyan Announces Armenian Government’s Imminent Resignation

Armenia’s government will resign on August 2, the day the newly elected parliament holds its first sitting, in accordance with the country’s constitution. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said Thursday’s cabinet meeting had been the last for the government in its current composition.

Once the new parliament begins its work, President Vahagn Khachaturyan will appoint as prime minister the candidate nominated by the parliamentary majority. A new government will then be formed.

“This is our last meeting in this composition,” Pashinyan said. He added that some current ministers would continue their work as members of the National Assembly.

Armenia held parliamentary elections on June 7. Pashinyan’s ruling Civil Contract party won 49.74% of the vote, retaining its parliamentary majority.

The Strong Armenia alliance, led by businessman Samvel Karapetyan, came second with 23.27%. The Armenia alliance, headed by former President Robert Kocharyan, finished third with 9.9%.

Turnout was about 59%, with around 1.48 million of roughly 2.5 million registered voters casting ballots. Sixteen parties and two political blocs contested seats in parliament.

Under Armenia’s constitution, the outgoing government must resign once the ninth convocation of parliament is formed. The cabinet will continue performing its duties until a new government is formed.
