Elena Patyaeva—a friend of Seda Suleymanova, who disappeared three years ago after being forcibly returned from St. Petersburg to Chechnya—was detained in Grozny. On August 23, Patyaeva stood by the monument to journalists who died for freedom of speech, holding a sign that read: "I demand an investigation into the murder of Seda Suleymanova." This was reported by the human rights project "Slovo Zashchite" (Word for the Defense).
Almost all regions of the North Caucasus abandoned New Year holidays
The authorities of Stavropol, Kabardino-Balkaria, Karachay-Cherkessia and Ingushetia abandoned mass New Year's festivities. Thus, the head of Ingushetia, Mahmud-Ali Kalimatov, said that there will be no fireworks or large-scale events in the republic, except for children, due to the current socio-political situation in the country and in the world.
Holiday concerts will not be held in North Ossetia. As for Dagestan, New Year's performances for children are organized there.
