EU Ambassador to Georgia: The European Union is going through the most difficult period in relations with Tbilisi

Representatives of EU countries have repeatedly said that the law on foreign agents will have a bad impact on Georgia’s European aspirations. The EU will discuss this topic next week, including at leader level. Presidents and prime ministers will decide what measures will be taken in response to this law. This was stated by the EU Ambassador to Georgia Pavel Gerchinsky.

“Integration into the European Union requires unity. Several member states have publicly stated that they are against the start of accession negotiations for Georgia if this law is passed. Now the law has been adopted, and there will be corresponding consequences. It is very unfortunate to see that the process of European integration of Georgia has been delayed, while we are moving forward with Moldova and Ukraine,” Gerchinsky shared.

In 2024, the police used more physical force against those detained at rallies against the law on foreign agents in Tbilisi and other cities than in 2023. Public Defender Levan Ioseliani spoke about this at a meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights.
