The head of the Georgian Orthodox Church, Shio III, stated that the country's demographic decline could lead to "other peoples" eventually outnumbering Georgians.
German Ambassador to Tbilisi Peter Fischer stated that Georgia has distanced itself from Ukraine and Moldova in the process of European integration. According to the diplomat, concern is growing within the German government over the Georgian authorities' current course.
"Georgia itself has distanced itself from Ukraine and Moldova on its shared path to the EU. We would like all three countries to move forward in unison, but that's not happening right now," Fischer said on TV Pirveli.
He also criticized the statement by Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze, who had previously addressed the "German people" regarding the possible breakdown of the partnership between Tbilisi and Saarbrücken.
"This is not how you join the European Union. You can take this as a recommendation from the ambassador of an EU member state," Fischer stated.
Saarbrücken authorities previously announced they were considering severing official ties with Tbilisi after more than 50 years of cooperation.
In response, Kaladze claimed that "the German bureaucracy, controlled by the Deep State," had turned long-standing ties between the cities into an instrument of political pressure. He added that Germany itself faces serious domestic problems, yet continues to criticize the situation in Georgia and resort to "harsh measures."
Earlier, EU Ambassador to Georgia Pavel Gerchinsky stated that the country is "at a crossroads" and called on Tbilisi to adhere to the course of integration into a European community based on democracy, the rule of law, and the protection of human rights.
