The President of Azerbaijan refused to join the “pro-Russian” economic union

Baku has no plans to join the EAEU (Eurasian Economic Union). In the future, much will depend on what additional economic benefits the country receives from being closer. This was announced by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev at the international forum on the topic “COP29 and Green Vision for Azerbaijan” in Baku.

Aliyev also commented on the process of normalizing relations with Armenia.

“Since our last meeting, all events have been developing in a positive direction, be it the process of normalization of relations or the delimitation of borders. We are very close to signing a peace agreement. We now have a common understanding of what a peace agreement should look like. Armenia agreed not to include the so-called. Nagorno-Karabakh into the peace agreement,” Aliyev said.

This means that the main obstacle no longer exists, the Azerbaijani leader said.

Recently, the Kremlin confirmed the withdrawal of the Russian military contingent from Nagorno-Karabakh, which was there on a peacekeeping mission under an agreement between Baku, Yerevan and Moscow. More than two thousand Russian military peacekeepers have been in the part of Karabakh not controlled by Azerbaijan since September 2020. This tenure was determined until 2025. In September 2023, Azerbaijan took full control of Karabakh, which became its sovereign territory.
