Regions of the North Caucasus Federal District (NCFD) have demonstrated the lowest alcohol consumption in Russia
Alcohol consumption among Russians has been steadily declining. November 2025 saw the eighth consecutive monthly decline, bringing the figures close to the minimum levels of 1997-1998.
The lowest alcohol consumption was recorded in three North Caucasus republics: Chechnya (0.1 liters per person), Ingushetia (0.6 liters per person), and Dagestan (0.8 liters per person). By comparison, in Moscow, consumption in November was 4.7 liters per person, and in St. Petersburg, 6.2 liters per person.
The average Russian drinks 7.6 liters of alcohol per year. Experts attribute the decline in alcohol consumption to rising prices and excise taxes, healthy lifestyle promotion, and changing generational attitudes.
