Mudflows, washed-out roads, and power outages: the aftermath of heavy rains in Chechnya

Heavy rains in Chechnya have resulted in mudflows, power outages, and infrastructure damage in several districts of the republic. The situation was most severe in the high-mountain Sharoi District, where the severe weather washed out roads and disrupted transportation to several villages.

District Head Ramazan Musayev told Chechnya Segodnya that the aftermath of the heavy rains has been reported in several villages. He said mudflows in the mountainous part of the district damaged roads, power lines, and other infrastructure.

Amid worsening weather, Chechenenergo has declared a state of high alert. The company stated that power workers have been put on high alert, and additional crews and special equipment have been prepared to handle potential emergencies.

Meanwhile, residents of several districts in the Chechen capital have complained of prolonged power outages. According to them, the power was out for almost a day; it wasn't restored until around 5 p.m.

For Grozny, such outages have become a common problem in recent years. They are particularly acute in apartment buildings, where the power goes out, along with the water supply. Residents complain that food spoils during prolonged outages, and power surges cause household appliances to malfunction.

The regional office of the Ministry of Emergency Situations reported that no dangerous rise in water levels in the republic's rivers has been recorded following the recent rains. According to the agency, by midday, precipitation continued only in the Shatoi District, while in other districts, the rains had ceased.

Rescuers have deployed additional observation posts to monitor the hydrological situation. The Ministry of Emergency Situations also reported that heavy rainfall has flooded five houses in the village of Alkhan-Yurt. Municipal services are providing assistance to local residents.

The department added that emergency response forces and resources remain on standby due to the ongoing storm warning. Forecasters predict that adverse weather conditions will persist in the republic until at least May 20.
