A new memorial plaque has been installed on the building where Novaya Gazeta journalist Anna Politkovskaya lived and was murdered. This follows more than twenty previous instances of the plaque being destroyed by unknown assailants. Activists intend to continue their work until it is permanently preserved.
According to Russian media, including RBC, prominent businessman and former senator from Chechnya, 67-year-old Umar Dzhabrailov died by suicide in a hotel on Tverskaya Street in Moscow. A pistol was found near his body.
According to updated information, the gunshot in the Vesper Tverskaya residential complex was heard around 1:00 a.m. Dzhabrailov, who suffered a gunshot wound to the head, died in the hospital at approximately 4:00 a.m. This is not his first suicide attempt: he was saved in 2020.
Umar Dzhabrailov, a native of Grozny, founded the Plaza hotel holding company in the 1990s. In 2000, he ran for the Russian presidential election, and from 2004 to 2009, he served as Chechnya's representative in the Federation Council. Umar Dzhabrailov also served as chairman of the board of trustees of the Moscow Museum of Modern Art and was an art collector. Another well-known incident occurred in 2017, when Dzhabrailov was fined for shooting at a Moscow hotel.
