Arrests extended for seriously ill riot participants at Makhachkala airport

The Soviet court of Makhachkala extended the detention of citizens accused of riots at Makhachkala airport on October 29, 2023. Some of them have diseases for which, by law, they cannot be kept in prison.

In particular, one of the arrested people develops chronic heart failure. However, the criminal case does not indicate what kind of violent hooligan acts he committed. Another person under investigation is in the hospital of the medical unit of the Federal Penitentiary Service. He suffers from pneumonia and purulent-obstructive chronic bronchitis.

Let us recall that on October 29, 2023, hundreds of people broke into Makhachkala airport, trying to find passengers on a transit flight from Tel Aviv. Those gathered opposed Israel's actions in Palestine. Criminal cases related to the riots were opened against more than 140 people. In total, almost 400 people were detained.

In total, more than 130 people are in pre-trial detention center on criminal charges. Most of them are charged with participation in mass riots (Part 2 of Article 212 of the Criminal Code). Also, the courts received more than 800 protocols under articles on violation of the rules for holding rallies and organizing the simultaneous presence of citizens (20.2 and 20.2.2 of the Administrative Code).

The Supreme Court of the Russian Federation granted the petition of the Prosecutor General's Office to change the territorial jurisdiction of the case of the five riot participants. According to lawyers, the change in jurisdiction is illegal and violates the constitutional rights of the accused.

Recently, Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev called the events in Makhachkala an example of the West’s attempts to shake up the situation in the North Caucasus Federal District. According to the speaker, the United States and its allies are trying to launch separatist processes in the North Caucasus with the help of provocations and disinformation. In 2023, 16 terrorist attacks were prevented there, and the activities of 149 groups – supporters of international terrorist organizations – were suppressed.
