The Insider: Russian authorities may have been plotting an assassination attempt on Akhmed Zakayev and his family

The Insider's journalists have uncovered a top-secret unit of the Russian intelligence services known as Center 795. According to the investigation, this unit began operating after the start of the "SVO," focusing on operations abroad. Denis Alimov, an officer of Center 795, was allegedly arrested in Colombia on charges of planning the kidnapping of opponents of the Russian government. It is believed that one of the targets may have been members of the family of Akhmed Zakayev, head of the government in exile in the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, including an assassination attempt on Zakayev himself.

According to the investigation, Alimov recruited Serbian Darko Durović for the operation against Zakayev and his relatives, offering him approximately $1.5 million for the "deportation" of each person and over $10 million for a third person, who was sought "dead or alive." Alimov's exposure occurred thanks to his use of Google Translate to communicate with Durovich, whose translated messages, according to FBI surveillance warrants, made it possible to track his activities.

As a reminder, in January 2025, the Southern District Military Court of the Russian Federation sentenced Akhmed Zakayev in absentia to 20 years in prison. According to Russian investigators, in July 2022, he declared himself the leader of the independent Chechen Republic and created a battalion within the Foreign Legion of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

In June 2024, Russian authorities placed Akhmed Zakayev on the international wanted list. He was charged under Part 1 of Article 205.4 of the Russian Criminal Code (creation of a terrorist organization) and Part 2 of Article 205.2 of the Russian Criminal Code (public justification of terrorism using the internet).

The Explainer Project suggests that the arrest of investigative journalist Oleg Roldugin of Novaya Gazeta may be linked to his investigation of assets acquired by individuals close to Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov following the "nationalization" of the Russian divisions of the major French dairy producer Danone. The publication's source claims that investigators are attempting to formulate charges against the journalist without disclosing the names of individuals associated with Kadyrov, which explains the lack of official information about any charges against Roldugin.
