Turkey may partially open its border with Armenia from early 2026

By January 1, 2026, Turkey plans to open its border with Armenia to citizens of other countries and holders of diplomatic passports, but has put forward a number of conditions and proposals. This was reported by the Armenian newspaper Hraparak.

According to the newspaper, Turkey has submitted a package of proposals to Yerevan for the normalization of relations. Opening the border for cargo shipments is not currently under discussion. Instead, Ankara has proposed that when Turkish goods transit through Georgia to Armenia, Armenia, rather than Georgia, be designated as the final destination.

Furthermore, Turkey has developed a protocol on the establishment of diplomatic relations, insisting that Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan personally visit the country to sign it, although such documents are usually signed by foreign ministers.
