Protesters in Vienna called on Kazakh authorities not to extradite Mansur Movlaev to Russia

A group of activists held a protest in Vienna outside the Kazakh embassy in support of Chechen refugee Mansur Movlaev. They urged Kazakh authorities not to extradite the young man to Russia.

"We call on the authorities of the Republic of Kazakhstan to demonstrate their commitment to truth, justice, and the international obligations they have undertaken," the protesters stated.

Mansur Movlaev was detained in Chechnya in 2022 and placed in a clandestine prison. He managed to escape and arrived in Kyrgyzstan in January 2023. In August 2023, Movlaev, wanted in Russia on charges of financing extremism, was detained in Kyrgyzstan.

A Bishkek court sentenced him to six months in prison followed by deportation. On November 20, 2023, Movlaev was released, but the deportation order remained in effect, and he left Kyrgyzstan.

In May 2025, Movlaev was arrested in Kazakhstan and placed in custody pending extradition. On January 30, it was announced that the Prosecutor General's Office of Kazakhstan had decided to extradite him to Russian law enforcement. Movlaev's defense appealed the decision. In February, the Supreme Court of Kazakhstan temporarily suspended the extradition order pending the full review of his asylum application.

On June 3, Mansur Movlaev reported the abduction and violence against his brother Zelimkhan in Chechnya, and on June 6, it was reported that his parents had been taken to an unknown location.
