Elena Patyaeva—a friend of Seda Suleymanova, who disappeared three years ago after being forcibly returned from St. Petersburg to Chechnya—was detained in Grozny. On August 23, Patyaeva stood by the monument to journalists who died for freedom of speech, holding a sign that read: "I demand an investigation into the murder of Seda Suleymanova." This was reported by the human rights project "Slovo Zashchite" (Word for the Defense).
Azerbaijan celebrates National Flag Day
Every year since 2009, Azerbaijan celebrates National Flag Day on November 9. The current tricolor flag of the country was first approved on November 9, 1918 by the government of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (ADR).
After the fall of the ADR and the establishment of Soviet power in 1920, this symbol was abandoned. It was restored in 1991 after the republic gained independence.
The blue color of the flag symbolizes Turkism, red symbolizes the desire for modernity, and green symbolizes Islam.
