Wanted lawyer detained in Chechnya

Lawyer Timur Idalov was detained in Chechnya and sent to Nalchik to attend a court hearing in a case in which he is a defendant.

Earlier, the Khimki City Court of the Moscow Region ordered that Idalov be sent to a pretrial detention center and put him on the wanted list. However, the man was not hiding - he was unable to attend the court hearing due to hospitalization.

On July 11, Idalov was forced to fly to Chechnya due to his mother's deteriorating health. He suddenly became ill and was urgently hospitalized in one of the hospitals. His lawyer notified the prosecutor's office and the Khimki City Court about this.

According to investigators, at a hearing of the Nikulinsky District Court of Moscow in October 2022, Timur Idalov allegedly made threats against the state prosecutor. He said the phrase: "What are you, Commissar Cattani? So they shot him." Idalov himself notes that he said this phrase in the heat of the moment and that it is not a threat. He later stated that the charges against him were fabricated by the FSB with the help of investigative bodies. The defense called the initiation of a criminal case revenge on the lawyer who is acting as a defense attorney in a number of high-profile criminal cases.

Timur Idalov is known for having appealed to the ECHR against the actions of the authorities during his arrest and imprisonment in a Moscow pretrial detention center and won the case.

In addition, the lawyer represented the interests of the former governor of the Khabarovsk Territory, Sergei Furgal, who was convicted of organizing murders. He also collaborated with the project "For Human Rights" and specialized in cases related to terrorism charges and high-profile murders.

Journalists, among other things, suggest that the case against Idalov could have been initiated because he compiled a protocol for questioning the former commander of the Wagner PMC, Andrei Medvedev. He told the media about cases of extrajudicial executions committed by PMC fighters.
