Georgia seeks to officially ban Mikheil Saakashvili's party

The Georgian government plans to file a lawsuit in October with the Constitutional Court seeking to ban the United National Movement (UNM) party, founded by Mikheil Saakashvili.

Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze stated that the lawsuit will also apply to other parties that share the UNM's ideology. He emphasized that these actions are aimed at curbing the activities of forces undermining the constitutional order.

The lawsuit will be based on the report of the parliamentary commission investigating alleged crimes committed during Saakashvili's presidency.

The announcement comes amid the arrest of former UNM chairman Levan Khabeishvili and Saakashvili's 12.5-year prison sentence.
