The International Press Institute (IPI) has expressed concern over new legislative initiatives by the Georgian government and ruling party that restrict independent media funding.
Students protest against the law on foreign agents in Georgia
In Tbilisi, university students marched against the bill on foreign agents. Later, a larger student march was announced. Earlier, at a protest rally, participants burned the flags of the Russian Federation and the ruling Georgian Dream party near the parliament building in the capital.
Let us recall that earlier Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze stated that criticism of the West will not be a basis for revising the decision regarding the above-mentioned law.
Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili vetoed the law adopted by the country's parliament on May 14. However, Speaker Papuashvili claims that the Georgian parliament will override the president's veto. He noted that the ruling party has enough votes in parliament for this.
