HRC announces a holiday on the date of return of Karachai people from deportation
Head of Karachaevo-Cherkessia Rashid Temrezov signed a decree declaring May 3 in the region a holiday. This is due to the celebration of the 66th anniversary of the return of the Karachai people to their historical homeland from the places of deportation.
May 3 was declared the Day of Rebirth of the Karachai people. It was at the beginning of May 1957 that the first echelons with the deportees during Stalin’s repressions arrived in their homeland. Since 1943, about 80,000 citizens of Karachaev nationality have been deported to Central Asia. Most of them died on the road and in places of resettlement.
