Ukraine may recognize the genocide of the Circassians by the Russian Empire.

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine will consider a draft resolution recognizing the genocide of the Circassians during the Caucasian War of 1763-1864 by the Russian Empire. The deputies also propose to call on modern Russia to apologize and recognize the right of the Circassians to return to the North Caucasus.

The Caucasian War (1817–1864) is a general name for the military actions of the Russian Imperial Army associated with the annexation of the North Caucasus to the Russian Empire, and its military confrontation with the mountain peoples.

Let us recall that in 2022, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine recognized Chechnya as a territory temporarily occupied by Russia, and also condemned the genocide of the Chechen people. Subsequently, a group of Ukrainian deputies proposed to make similar decisions regarding the Circassian people. The document provides for recognition of the mass extermination of Circassians by the Russian army during the Russian-Caucasian War of 1763-1864 and their expulsion from their homeland as an act of genocide.
