Another street named after Dzhokhar Dudayev has appeared in Ukraine

By decision of the Kharkiv City Council, Ukraine, Kubanska Street has been renamed in honor of Dzhokhar Dudayev.

This marks the seventh street or alley in various Ukrainian cities to commemorate the first president of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria.

Earlier, on April 21, 2026—the 30th anniversary of the assassination of the former Chechen leader by Russian security services—a memorial plaque was unveiled on the facade of a building on Dudayev Street in the city center in Lviv.

Meanwhile, three decades after his death, the figure of Dzhokhar Dudayev continues to provoke a sharp reaction from Russian authorities and propaganda.

Last year's interview with Soviet and Russian pop star Alla Pugacheva, in which she spoke favorably of Dzhokhar Dudayev, continues to haunt Russian officials and nationalists.

In an interview with the "Skazhi Gordeyeva" channel in September 2025, Pugacheva said:

"The first Chechen war is especially memorable to me because I knew Dzhokhar Dudayev. He was such a decent, honorable, intelligent man—a beautiful man. And what a wife! Oh, what a wife: an artist, a writer, a politician. I'm even ashamed: she called me, thinking I could help. But how could I help? Nothing. I'm even ashamed to say hello to her now. Alla Fyodorovna, if you happen to see this interview, I apologize for not being able to do anything to keep Dzhokhar alive, to help you in any way."

For this statement, the singer was sued in Russia for 1.5 billion rubles, accused of "insulting war veterans," and criticism continues to this day.

However, even a Russian court has not yet found any violation in the singer's words.
