Georgian authorities are confident that the country will not be deprived of its EU candidate status

The European Commission directly says not to pay any attention to members of the European Parliament. Therefore, their demand to suspend the status of an EU candidate country for Georgia due to the law on foreign agents is zero. This was stated by Speaker of Parliament Shalva Papuashvili.

“The same members of the European Parliament demanded that we release Saakashvili and called this a prerequisite for obtaining candidate status. The same deputies demanded that we introduce sanctions against Russia and said that this is a necessary condition for candidate status. We did not accept their conditions, but Georgia was still granted status,” Papuashvili said.

The day before, more than 30 members of the European Parliament called on the Vice-President of the European Commission, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, to suspend Georgia’s status as a candidate for accession to the EU. According to the applicants, the Georgian authorities overstepped their bounds in attempting to silence peaceful demonstrators through the use of force. The deputies also asked to change the financial support programs for Georgia from the European Union.
