A Dagestani blogger convicted of assaulting a police officer has been released

Askhabali Alibekov, a former Dagestani military man known by the pseudonym "Wild Paratrooper," has been released from a prison colony in Adygea. He was previously sentenced to prison for assaulting a law enforcement officer in 2024. Alibekov intends to continue his public activity, stating his desire to fight "for the freedom of all Russian people."

According to the blogger, his activities are aimed at defending freedom of speech, preventing "unnecessary wars," opposing the raising of the retirement age, and ensuring decent wages.

According to official records, the incident that led to the charges occurred in February 2024 at a train station in Kazan, where, according to investigators, Alibekov struck a police officer twice in the leg during an arrest. He insisted he had arrived in the city as an observer for the presidential elections but was assaulted by law enforcement officers, who, according to him, threw him to the ground and beat him.

Earlier, in March 2023, Alibekov was sentenced to one year and two months in prison for "discrediting" the Russian army. The reason for his first sentence was his stance on peaceful resolution of the conflict after the start of the "SVO." The blogger's lawyer noted that he wanted to protect his son from participating in the war. In 2018, he served in the Black Sea Fleet and had previously called for a boycott of the presidential elections.

The Memorial Human Rights Center has recognized Askhabali Alibekov as a political prisoner.
