Amnesty International expressed concern about the health of imprisoned opposition politician Tofig Yagublu. In a letter to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, human rights activists reported a serious deterioration in the prisoner's health.
According to Amnesty International, Yagublu, who is being held in Correctional Facility No. 17, is experiencing severe knee pain, which significantly limits his mobility and requires the use of crutches. However, prison administration is allegedly preventing the delivery of crutches. Furthermore, Yagublu's family has not been provided with the results of an MRI scan performed approximately one month ago.
Human rights activists called on the Azerbaijani authorities to guarantee the opposition leader the necessary medical care and release him immediately.
Earlier in March, Tofig Yagublu ended his 26-day hunger strike. He withdrew his protest at the request of his supporters and family, who informed him of significant public support and international interest in his case. Specifically, he was informed of the measures being taken in the United States on his behalf and the involvement of the US Congress in examining his situation.
As a reminder, Tofig Yagublu, a member of the Musavat party and a member of the coordinating center of the National Council of Democratic Forces of Azerbaijan, was sentenced in 2025 to nine years in prison. He was accused of fraud and document forgery. Yagublu maintains his innocence and believes the criminal prosecution is politically motivated.
