Azerbaijan evacuated over 3,000 people from Iran

Since the outbreak of hostilities in Iran, Azerbaijan has accepted over 3,100 evacuees. These include 551 Azerbaijani citizens, 354 Russian citizens, 19 Georgian citizens, and 728 Chinese citizens.

In addition, representatives from India, Bangladesh, Tajikistan, Pakistan, and other countries were evacuated. These events followed Israeli and US airstrikes on Iran that began on February 28, as well as Iran's retaliatory actions.

The drone attack on the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic on March 5, which injured four people, has fueled tensions between Azerbaijan and Iran. Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev accused Iran of a "deliberate terrorist attack," but his Iranian counterpart, Masoud Pezeshkian, denied his country's involvement in the incident. Following a telephone conversation between the two leaders, Azerbaijan lifted restrictions on cargo traffic across the border with Iran and sent humanitarian aid.
