Azerbaijan's Media Development Agency has dismissed reports of heavy weapons being deployed on the border with Iran as fake news. The agency stated that a video circulating on social media, allegedly showing this, was actually filmed in January and shows the planned movement of military equipment.
Azerbaijan has begun evacuating its diplomats from Iran, Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov announced. The process will affect the embassy in Tehran and the consulate general in Tabriz.
The move was triggered by yesterday's Iranian drone attack on Nakhchivan Airport, which President Ilham Aliyev classified as a terrorist attack, blaming the Iranian authorities. In response, Aliyev also declared full combat readiness for all Iranian security forces.
The General Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces denied involvement in the drone attack, emphasizing respect for the sovereignty of neighboring countries. Tehran claimed Israel was responsible for the incident. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi contacted his Azerbaijani counterpart Bayramov on March 5, announcing the launch of an investigation.
Azerbaijan, which shares a 700-kilometer border with Iran, is concerned about possible aggression from Tehran due to Baku's close ties with Israel. It is noted that Iran, in addition to Israel and the United States, also attacked energy facilities in the Persian Gulf after their operations began.
