Elena Patyaeva—a friend of Seda Suleymanova, who disappeared three years ago after being forcibly returned from St. Petersburg to Chechnya—was detained in Grozny. On August 23, Patyaeva stood by the monument to journalists who died for freedom of speech, holding a sign that read: "I demand an investigation into the murder of Seda Suleymanova." This was reported by the human rights project "Slovo Zashchite" (Word for the Defense).
Azerbaijan celebrates Independence Restoration Day
On October 18, Azerbaijan celebrates the Day of Restoration of State Independence.
32 years ago, the country's parliament adopted the Constitutional Act on the restoration of state sovereignty. With this document, the Azerbaijan Republic was declared the successor to the Democratic Republic of 1918-1920, which fell as a result of occupation by Russia. According to the Constitutional Act, all citizens were guaranteed full equality, regardless of nationality and religion.
