Azerbaijani oppositionist spoke about pressure and deteriorating conditions in the colony

Azerbaijan Popular Front Party activist Alezamin Salayev, sentenced to four years in prison, complained about the deteriorating conditions in the correctional facility and threatened a dry hunger strike. After deteriorating health and heart problems, he was placed in a barracks with a large number of convicts.

In this regard, the chairman of the Azerbaijan Democratic Front Party, Ali Karimli, issued a statement in which he condemned the pressure on the activist: “Everyone knows that you slandered Alezamin Salayev and arrested him. He said that pressure was being put on him and some kind of provocation was being prepared against him. Alezamin sent a message that if the pressure does not stop, he will have to start a dry hunger strike again. Inciting a person suffering from cardiovascular disease to starve to death out of despair is an indirect attempt on his life.”

Alezamin Salaev was detained in February 2023 on charges of hooliganism with the use of a weapon. He was sentenced to four years in prison. He called the criminal case fabricated for political reasons and repeatedly went on hunger strikes demanding release. The US Embassy in Baku called on the Azerbaijani authorities to release the activist and other political prisoners.
