Drone attack on Volgograd leaves one dead, eight injured

The number of people injured in a large-scale Ukrainian drone attack on the southern Russian city of Volgograd has risen to nine after rescuers recovered the body of a woman from the rubble of a residential building struck overnight on July 31.

Eight other residents were injured, including two who remain in serious condition, according to Volgograd Region Governor Andrei Bocharov.

The attack shattered windows in residential buildings across several districts of the city. Local authorities said at least eight apartment blocks in Volgograd's Traktorozavodsky district were damaged after being hit by drones. A temporary shelter was opened for displaced residents, although most were later able to return to their homes.

The strikes also targeted industrial and logistics infrastructure. A fire broke out at an undisclosed fuel and energy facility, although Russian authorities have not identified the site. Reuters noted that the region is home to Lukoil's Volgograd oil refinery, which has been targeted by Ukrainian drone strikes on several previous occasions.

New DOSH previously reported that a Wildberries logistics hub in Volgograd also came under attack, triggering a fire. The company said its staff had been evacuated and that there were no reports of employee casualties.

The attack was not the first to hit the retailer's logistics facilities. Ukraine has argued that such sites are used to support Russia's military logistics, an allegation that Moscow rejects.

Drone strikes also caused major disruption at Volgograd Airport. Restrictions on arrivals and departures remained in place for nearly seven hours, delaying at least 16 flights to Moscow, St. Petersburg, Yerevan and other destinations.

Russia's Defence Ministry said its air defence systems intercepted drones over several regions during the night, with Volgograd Region among the main targets of the attack.

In recent weeks, Ukraine has significantly intensified strikes on Russian energy and logistics infrastructure, including oil refineries, warehouses and distribution centres. Volgograd Region has repeatedly been among the regions targeted in these attacks.
