The overnight drone attack affected several regions across southern Russia, including areas within the North Caucasian and Southern Federal Districts.
In Dagestan, the capital bore the brunt of the attack. According to the region's acting head, Fyodor Shchukin, all aerial targets were destroyed. He stated that fires breaking out in the city were caused by falling debris from the downed drones. The Makhachkala seaport and the Avar Music and Drama Theater caught fire; both blazes were successfully extinguished. Official reports indicate there were no fatalities or injuries.
Local social media channels are warning Dagestan residents that photographing or filming drone impacts within the republic is prohibited and could lead to criminal prosecution.
Authorities in the Rostov region also reported widespread consequences. Governor Yuri Slyusar stated that approximately 90 drones were shot down. Kamensk-Shakhtinsky, Taganrog, Novoshakhtinsk, Volgodonsk, and 16 other districts were targeted. In the Millerovsky district, falling debris damaged two private homes, vehicles, and a power transmission line. There were no reports of injuries at the time of publication.
Airports in Makhachkala, Grozny, Vladikavkaz, Krasnodar, Sochi, and Volgograd suspended operations during the night attack; restrictions were lifted by morning. Residents of Kabardino-Balkaria and Stavropol Krai were also warned of the drone threat.
The drone attacks in the south began as early as the evening of September 9. Authorities reported an attack involving uncrewed surface vessels in Sochi. According to the Krasnodar Krai operational headquarters, eight people were injured, five of whom were hospitalized; beach infrastructure and a section of the waterfront promenade sustained damage. In the Voronezh region, a drone crashed into a private home, killing one person and injuring two others. Unofficial reports indicate that a vessel linked to the "shadow fleet" caught fire in the Sea of Azov.
According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, Russian forces intercepted and destroyed a total of 448 Ukrainian drones on the night of September 10. The ministry reported attacks over the Astrakhan, Belgorod, Bryansk, Volgograd, Voronezh, Kaluga, Kursk, Oryol, Rostov, and Tula regions, as well as over Dagestan, Kalmykia, annexed Crimea, and Krasnodar Krai. The ministry claims that some of the drones were destroyed over the Caspian and Black Seas.
For its part, the Ukrainian side reported that the Russian army used 149 drones to attack Ukraine on the night leading into Thursday. Kyiv claims that some of these were launched from Millerovo (Rostov region) and Primorsko-Akhtarsk (Krasnodar Krai). At least six people were reported killed, and another 44 were injured.
