The case of Yakubov and Mailubaev: not a rebellion, but an encroachment

The trial of Zagir Yakubov and Rasul Mailubaev from the Stavropol Territory has already been completed. The Supreme Court of Dagestan sentenced both to 14 years of maximum security for participation in an attack on Russian military personnel in the Botlikhsky district of Dagestan. We are talking about the armed invasion of the detachments of Shamil Basayev and Khattab in August 1999, which became the pretext for the start of the second Russian-Chechen war. According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, the invasion killed about 300 military and civilian people, as well as law enforcement officers.
According to investigators, Nogais Zagir Yakubov and Rasul Mailubaev, natives of Neftekumsk, were trained at the Islamic Institute Caucasus training center in Chechnya and, as part of the Nogai Jamaat group, attacked the military. As a result of the shelling in which they allegedly took part, 33 soldiers were killed and another 34 were injured.
Yakubov and Mailubaev were detained in October 2020. They were found guilty of armed rebellion, but were released from punishment, since the statute of limitations for this article had already passed. At the same time, they were sentenced for encroaching on the lives of military personnel, reports the publication “Caucasus. Realities."
