Archil Gorduladze, a member of the Georgian Parliament from the ruling Georgian Dream party, stated that the European Union is no less interested in Georgia than the country itself is in rapprochement with the EU. According to him, this is primarily due to the country's geographical location.

"Just as Georgia needs the European Union, the EU may need Georgia even more at the moment, given our geographical location," the politician stated.

He was responding to the comments of European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos, who did not include Georgia among the candidate countries for EU accession. According to the MP, European officials evaluate Tbilisi's actions primarily from a political perspective, even when official EU studies give the country higher marks than some other candidates.

Gorduladze also accused European institutions of attempting to influence Georgia's domestic politics. According to him, Kos is particularly critical of Tbilisi after the adoption of laws restricting foreign funding. These funds, the MP claims, are being used to organize protests and "xenophobic campaigns."

In this context, Gorduladze also stated that Europe itself is experiencing a serious civilizational crisis.

"Conducting dialogue from the perspective of those on the brink of a civilizational abyss is harmful to them," he said.

On August 25, European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos spoke in Zagreb at a conference of Croatian ambassadors. She spoke about the preparation of a new EU enlargement policy and named Montenegro, Albania, Ukraine, and Moldova among the countries that have made progress on the path to accession. Kos did not mention Georgia in this context.

The European Commissioner also stated the need to strengthen democratic guarantees for future EU members and proposed gradually integrating candidate countries into European structures even before their full accession. The European Commission plans to present more detailed proposals in September.
