Ex-policeman from Ingushetia has his sentence increased for beating a pensioner

The Supreme Court of Ingushetia toughened the sentence of police officer of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Amiran Merzhoev for beating a disabled pensioner. Instead of four years of suspended imprisonment, the defendant was sentenced to two years in a penal colony.

A criminal case was opened after security forces in Magas detained local resident Timur Derbichev on suspicion of illegal drug possession in January 2022. At the department, Merzhoev approached the detainee and demanded to kneel, and after refusing, he beat Derbichev.
A criminal case was opened against two police officers.

In addition, Merzhoev and a colleague extorted a bribe of 400 thousand rubles from a pensioner in order not to draw up a report on the discovery of drugs. Derbichev, who has a second group disability, received bruises, a traumatic brain injury and rib fractures as a result of the beatings.
