Elena Milashina and Alexander Nemov spoke about injuries sustained as a result of beatings in Grozny

The journalist Yelena Milashina and the lawyer Alexander Nemov, who were attacked in Chechnya yesterday morning, were transported to a hospital in Beslan in the afternoon, and in the evening of the same day they were taken to Moscow by a special plane. They were followed by the editor-in-chief of Novaya Gazeta Dmitry Muratov and journalist Alexei Venediktov to North Ossetia.

In Moscow, Milashina was diagnosed with a concussion, a fracture of two fingers of her right hand, several closed fractures of the wrist, multiple bruises of the head and face, abrasions on her body, blunt trauma and bruising of the chest, and a stab wound on the left hand. Lawyer Alexander Nemov, in turn, said that he was safe and on the mend: “Many thanks to all the doctors, both in Vladikavkaz and in Moscow. Incredibly high level of empathy. I don't want to share health details. An infinite number of hematomas and bruises, a stab wound were revealed. The dynamics are good."

On the morning of July 4, a journalist from Novaya Gazeta and a lawyer working with the Anti-Torture Team were intercepted by three cars near the airport in Grozny, where they had arrived for the sentencing of Zarema Musayeva. After that, about 10 armed men in balaclavas dragged them away and began to beat them severely, including with polypropylene pipes. Nemov was also stabbed.

None of the suspects have been detained, although the airport itself and the adjacent highway are equipped with CCTV cameras. The victims believe that at least two of the attackers flew with them on the same flight from Moscow, therefore, video surveillance equipment could have recorded some of the attackers.
Experts point to the interest of the Chechen authorities in this action and are confident that the perpetrators, as in the commission of similar crimes in Chechnya earlier, will not be found.
