Elena Patyaeva—a friend of Seda Suleymanova, who disappeared three years ago after being forcibly returned from St. Petersburg to Chechnya—was detained in Grozny. On August 23, Patyaeva stood by the monument to journalists who died for freedom of speech, holding a sign that read: "I demand an investigation into the murder of Seda Suleymanova." This was reported by the human rights project "Slovo Zashchite" (Word for the Defense).
The ECHR ordered the Russian Federation to pay compensation to a Chechen journalist
The European Court of Human Rights awarded compensation in the amount of 7,500 euros to the journalist, a native of Chechnya, Zhalaudi Geriev. The ECHR found his treatment degrading and found a violation of one of the articles of the Human Rights Convention. During the trial, the man was kept in a cage.
In April 2016, Zhalaudi Geriev was kidnapped by security forces on his way to Grozny airport, from where he was planning to fly to Moscow. He was accused of working against the Chechen authorities and was tortured. In September of the same year, the Shali City Court sentenced Geriev to three years in prison on charges of drug possession. He was released in 2019. Currently lives abroad.
